The edges are raised a little which gives him somewhere to put his head. The small is JUST BIG ENOUGH to hold a 9 pound pomeranian. <br /> <br />Overall, for the price, it works well. Only problem is that Walgreens was having a sale on pet beds and had beds that were much bigger, fluffier and nicer for $10. My dog especially loves the "bumpers" on the surround, which she uses as a pillow. I actually own the Precision Crate that is one size up from this bed size, but I wanted to allow for some extra room in the crate for her food/water bowls (feeding her in the crate was one way I used to get her more comfortable with being in the crate). This bed is the perfect size exactly for that - there is just enough room for both the bed and the food/water bowls. Now that I don't use the crate very much anymore, I took the bed out, and she still likes sleeping on it, often preferring it to the bed or couch. <br /> <br />I did expect that the base of the bed would have had more padding, though; it is much thinner than I would have thought. It's the perfect size for the crate, and the divider panel in our crate doesn't have any trouble fitting over the plush sides. The bed is also washable, which is a great feature when you have a puppy. In fact, we liked it so much that we bought the same product in another color for use as a "bed" in our family room. It is very effective in removing hair compared to other brushes. It is effective on both short haired and long haired cats.
